What do you do in your free time?

I love making music. I play in a small indie band and when I go on holiday, I'd rather go on tour than book an all-inclusive hotel.

What is your favorite song, book or movie?

My favourite book is "Until I Find You" by John Irving. I like these American storytellers like him, Richard Powers, or Jonathan Safran Foer and when a novel takes time for characters and perspectives. My favourite German author is Juli Zeh. Her questions about meaning, morality, chaos and order always captivate me. Jonathan Littell's "The Kindly Ones" is not necessarily a beautiful novel, but it is extreme and the most shocking thing I have ever read.

What do you think your employees are saying about you when they are drinking a coffee in the break room?

Probably at the beginning it would be something like: How can this person be a singer in a band and at the same time be so quiet and inaccessible? But believe me, it can be done. Quick social bonding is certainly not my speciality - just give me a bit of time. And then we'll have the next coffee together, please.

How important are formal degrees or qualifications in a time when technologies are constantly changing and evolving?

Formal degrees and qualifications are great proof that you can learn and follow through. But more important than a certificate is what you can really do and how you keep developing. Personally, I have nothing more to show than an aborted degree in geography and yet I am convinced that I can do my job well.

If a really good friend was asking about where you work, how would you describe the areas that shine at your company?

VAT and Customs are not a sexy topic. And a web of national and international rules and authorities complicates the whole thing. These are two good reasons to fully automate the collection and settlement of taxes and duties. eClear is really good at this - so that our customers can concentrate on their core competencies.

What does the first day of work look like in your company?

Of course: we check that your workplace and its equipment meet your requirements. We will familiarise you with our communication tools. There will be a short introduction to the legal basis for VAT and Customs in cross-border e-commerce - and how eClear's products make it possible to automate the relevant processes. We will introduce you to the structures of the company and arrange meetings with the people you will be working with. But most importantly, we get to know each other personally, in a relaxed atmosphere away from the workplace, e.g. over lunch, a coffee break, or an after-work drink if you like.

Which books, blogs or media would you recommend to your employees?

Honestly: read, listen and watch what you find exciting. We have all experienced enough at school that good content is only perceived as boring because it has been classified as a "must read". If you're passionate about a subject, dive in and see what you learn. Hopefully, these are not just social media capable headlines, but you really know your stuff. And to mention something more concrete here: If anyone is interested in SEO, I can recommend the definitive guides by Mister Brian Dean on his blog backlinko.com.

If you don't admit to being unconvinced about something and therefore do a task half-heartedly. Please be honest and let us find the best solutions as a team!
